Beginning of Love

"The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them."
--Thomas Merton

"愛一個人的開始,應鼓勵對方表現最真實一面,而不是扭曲對方來迎合自己的幻想。如根本不愛對方的本性,而愛潛在喜歡的可能性,那麼就是說你愛的不是這個人:而是對方身上反射出來那自己的倒影" --湯瑪斯.莫頓

Meditation and creativity

If thoughts are seen to be the "subject" in Art, the in-between thoughts would be the "negative space" or the "background". Meditation is an acquired skill to learn to see the negative space as well as looking at the subject the way it is, to be consciously aware of the perceptions we forced onto them that limit us. New horizons, ideas and opportunities opens up when we train the mind to see the "unseen" and to see the "seen" with no judgement, and see what others otherwise cannot see🎈

Not Knowing

Let there be room for not knowing. When things fall apart, have courage to keep your eyes open, your heart open and your mind open like a true warrior...when we stop watering the negative seeds, that's when we notice the endless opportunities in every moment

Grief and lose

To those who are grieving, I offer you my good thoughts and the quote by Sogyal Rinpoche in Tibetan Book of Living and Dying "Think of your ordinary emotional, thought-ridden self as a block of ice or a slab of butter left out in the sun. If you are feeling hard and cold, let this aggression melt away in the sunlight of your meditation. Let peace work on you, gather your scattered mind into the mindfulness of Calm Abiding, and awaken in you the awareness and insight of Clear Seeing. And you will find all your negativity disarmed, your aggression dissolved, and your confusion evaporating slowly like mist into the vast and stainless sky of your absolute nature...

Thoughts of the day

"Attention is the most basic form of love" - John Tarrant

Finding love is not the destination, in fact it is the beginning of a whole new ride. It is helpful to remember that love is about giving attention rather than only focusing on the getting. With practice of compassion, we hold love and pain at the same time and nurture the relationship (like our body and mind during meditation) together with love and awareness, this way, all in it can be nourished, grow and continue to build it together no matter it is a romantic, family or be a good friend that supports each other in need. The relationship will become what gives us love and not the other way around.

Can one Be spiritual and Angry at the same time?

7/4/2017

Strong emotions like anger, frustration, depression etc. are not fun, its horrible, it makes us feel we are not spiritual and a terrible person. Especially when you are a teacher I suppose (haha!) In fact, that doesn't make you terrible by feeling what you feel by being vulnerable, but its more of the way whether or not you are handling it with compassion in your actions. If you haven't figured out how to meet your anger and acting out aggressively, like taking out a baseball bat and start bashing on things or people then that becomes a problem because it would be a way of harming others.

We can never create a situation that we wont get negative emotions, human experience consists of both positive and negative ones, there is value in both of them for us to learn and practice gentleness on, in which they will contribute to our learning from the full human experience.

The Buddha said when we know who we are, sufferings will end. There are a lot of various lenses to look at the sentence but the best person who can tell you which is the best angle for you, its from you. Your meditation practice will tell you as you feel your own hearts and know who you are. You then will know how to deal with situations in life. Happy Meditating!

Embracing and grasping

6/27/2017

In today's practice, my teacher Susan mentioned the initial practice of Kalachakra Tantra or the Practice of the Wheel of time, it is the most advanced form of practice in the Vajrayana revolves around time and cycles from cycles of planets to cycles of breaths. It is about embracing the temporal human experience as oppose to transcending ourselves to another realm. "Embracing of temporal" inspired me to think about the presence of impermanence...how are we going to experience everything that is ever changing around us and still to embrace it? People, environment, feelings, relationships, physical and mental states, for the better or worse, they evolve and change constantly, we hold on so dearly to what we love, grasping causes suffering and it is painful to lose what we have, in the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism, the third Noble Truth is the truth of impermanence stated its existence, and for that, I was thinking or I can be wrong, with the practice of compassion it might be an antidote. Isn't compassion the ability to hold love and pain at the same time? As we imagine the feeling of embracing person or an event versus grasping them, the journey seems to continue even after "death do us apart". When each time love expands by a molecule, its accompanied by a same sized molecule of pain due to impermanence, practicing compassion would be a great way too in terms of continuing the journey together through all times and cycles...
